![]() ![]() There was once a little brown bat who couldn' t sleep days-he kept waking up and looking at the world. School Library Journal writes, "The totality charms by turns the eye, the ear, and the imagination, and as true poetry must, it satisfies the heart." (All ages) -Karin Snelson From the Back Cover:īook Description Paperback. Maurice Sendak decorates more than illustrates the book with delicate, endearing pen-and-ink sketches of woodland scenes-the perfect complement to Jarrell's lyrical, philosophical, exquisitely spun fable. Children will identify with the bat-poet's struggle to be understood, and adults will revel in Jarrell's artful prose and gentle wisdom. The bat-poet attempts to sing a song like the mockingbird's, "But when he tried, his high notes were all high and the notes in between were all high," so he imitates the mockingbird's words instead, and concocts poetry about how the sun "shines like a million moons" and other daytime marvels. But when he tries to get his bat friends to stay awake with him, they say, "Day's to sleep in." And so the sensitive bat-poet is left alone to embrace the wonders of the day, including the fascinating activities of the possums, squirrels, chipmunks, and especially the mockingbird. One day, he discovers how amazing it is to stay awake during daylight hours, exploring things mostly unseen by standard, nocturnal bats. ![]() ![]() Although the bat-poet may look like a furry mouse with wings, he swells with an artistic sensibility. ![]() Randall Jarrell's The Bat-Poet is the story of an artist. ![]()

SF nowadays reveals an extensive problem in the genre and the people defining the genre. Sanos was only one of the brilliantly created evil character types in Talon, and it made it to both novels which was unfortunate. What bothered me the most is that the evil character, Tomas Nau, looks a lot like Lord Steel from “A Fire Upon The Deep”. It would be worth reading “A Deepness in the Sky” if you insert at least one other book between the two novels, then perhaps the repetition is not so boring. ![]() “A Fire Upon The Deep” and “A Deepness in the Sky” are very similar: a beautiful comparative analysis study could be written about them. Jack has always seemed to be inherently good and I picture him with clean cut good looks so it is easy to forget that he began his existence as an Angel of Dark. Jack and Schuyler’s bonding is certainly one that is made against all odds. Of course, this isn’t a journey that runs smoothly. The main focus of Bloody Valentine is the bonding of Jack and Schuyler, against all Blue Blood tradition. We get to see a little of Allegra’s adolescence and a peek into her romance with Schuyler’s father. It tells us a little more of the story behind Schuyler’s coming to be, though raising more questions than it answers.
